Morning Star

Salvation Army Anacortes Corps officers Mike and Beth Paugh, family and a handful of friends enjoyed an afternoon of sailing last weekend during a visit by Lloyd and Pene Mathison. The Mathisons, who volunteer out of the Salvation Army’s Puyallup Corps, played host on a Saturday afternoon sail from Cap Sante Marina. Skipper Lloyd (see top photo) gave everyone a turn at the wheel, including Anacortes sixth grader Sarah Covert. The Mathisons named their vessel “Morning Star” in reference to a Bible verse in the Book of Revelation (Rev. 2:28). The retired wife and husband hope to conduct a ministry of their own among guests on the sailboat. On Sunday, June 22, Lloyd and Pene made a video presentation at a Salvation Army worship service. Subject of their talk was mission work to create a men’s shelter in Estonia, formerly part of the USSR.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
