Dish garden

I love the treats at the Chocolate Factory on Commercial Avenue, but this morning I opted for treats with a few less calories. None, to be precise. Rather than pulling in to the dessert shop (which also serves great meals), I stopped next door at The Dish. This shop just happens to be owned by my younger sister Marianne. I was disappointed to find Sis was otherwise engaged, as we do our best visiting at the store. But on the way back to the car I noticed how beautiful her gardens looked, so I grabbed my camera for a few floral “portraits.” I have childhood memories (fuzzy, at best) of Mom and little Marianne hanging out on occasion across the street at Alice Smeby’s house. Not only did Mrs. Smeby have an awesome garden, but I believe there were occasional tea parties as well for a delighted young neighbor. Marianne’s love of flowers is still evident in the garden at her business. It’s no Butchart, but it’s very nice. I’m always rewarded when I stop by.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
