Early fall beach scenes
There were a few breaks of blue skies and sunshine, but for the most part, this midweek Washington Park adventure could have been photographed in black and white. Pictured first is a closeup of the weathered trunk of a bluff tree, bleached and contorted by years of high winds and salt air. A seagull takes advantage of strong winds, sailing around the bluff to join other birds on the beach below. A large stump pushes out of the beach rocks, reminiscent of an eastern Washington rock formation. Like an ancient rock formation, this stump is steadily shrinking under the pressures of nature. Finally, a splash of color as the sun spotlights a wild berry, casting a hard shadow on an underlying leaf. I recall picking these berries as a boy for make-believe “soups.”
