Grassroots politics

The weather was ugly and the Yankees were in a do-or-die playoff game, but more than 120 people still made their way to City Hall for a candidates night sponsored by the Anacortes Chamber of Commerce. Included on the panel of candidates were Port of Anacortes incumbents Pat Mooney and Merrill Thibert (speaking in photo two), facing opponents Brian Wetcher and Steve Hopley, respectively. City Council incumbent Ken Brown shared the podium with his opponent, Brad Adams. Loren Hoboy, who is in a race with an opponent who is not actively campaigning, had the luxury of commenting without rebuttal. Also present for the event were school board candidates Chris Anderson and Lucie Yeomans. Chamber President Randy Burgess (photo three) thanked candidates and members of the audience for their contributions to the health of the community. Moderator Duncan Frazier presented questions from the audience in a Q&A session following initial introductions. The general election is Tuesday, Nov. 4.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
