Friday night football

Despite high winds, it was a balmy evening by October standards. It was also a great night to be a fan of Anacortes High School football. Although the Hawks went into halftime down one point to Lynden (14-13), the second half started out with a bang. Jason Walters (No. 3, pictured with Coach Ted Beyer on sidelines) placed a punt inside the one yard line early into the third quarter. AHS defense did an awesome job of stuffing Lynden’s offense, and a couple of minutes later Jake Wakeman pushed in for the go-ahead touchdown (bottom photo). Obviously the offense did its job, but it was the Seahawk defense that frustrated Lynden in the second half and forced a couple of key turnovers. A great team effort for a team that has put together just the right combination of skills and emotional play in eacdh game to go 7-0 for the season.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
