Anacortes & Fidalgo Railroad

Miniature electric train enthusiasts have been meeting weekly for 10 years as the Anacortes & Fidalgo Model Railroad club. Members (most in photo four) include Jay Huff, Frank Beckman, Mike O’Brien, Doug Greenfield, Steve Jaffray, Iver Johnson, John Gruenwald, John Lombardi, Bill Rutledge and Curt Johnson. Guests at their recent Open House included Bow resident Hank Breeding, his son Alec and daughter Zoie. Among scenes in the club’s display area is a working railroad trestle like that over Swinomish Slough. There are also miniature replicas of the Texaco refinery at March’s Point and the Anacortes Depot, located just two blocks from club headquarters.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
