Saturday with the Lutes

It was my privilege Saturday to be a part of Pacific Lutheran University football coach Frosty Westering’s farewell game, complete with post-game festivities. Westering wrapped up a 32-year career at PLU as his Lutes defeated cross-town rivals UPS in dramatic fashion with a come-from-behind second half performance. Post-game tributes included kind words from sportscaster Tony Ventrella of Channel 13 (photo three). Surrounding the coach were his team and many members of his family. More tributes followed on campus at an “after glow” event, an awesome Westering tradition where team members introduce family and guests and “attaways” and tributes to God are distributed liberally. Among freshmen ballplayers cited for their contributions to this year’s sucesses was AHS graduate Dan Rosales (top photo, fourth from left). In bottom photo, Coach Westering addresses a large fieldhouse crowd from his familiar stool, a fixture this year on the sidelines as the 75-year-old coach coped with physical restrictions. “Go, Frosty! Attaway! Attaway!!”

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
