Back from the boat parade

Judging last night’s Christmas Boat Parade from a comfortable perch at Randy’s Pier 61 Restaurant were Mike Keller, Sue Keller and Anacortes Chamber Executive Michael Broome (right). The judges watched as a string of decorated vessels cruised past them on the Guemes Channel on a return trip to Cap Sante Marina. Among the boats in the parade were the Tia Maria, sporting a Santa and Orca, and the Island Adventures crew, pictured back at their berth at parade’s end. A disgruntled heron at the marina flew the coop when a photographer happened by. Results on the parade competition are forthcoming.

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
