Anacortes High School was alive with activity Thursday, Jan. 15 when hundreds of students gathered for a regional competition sponsored by DECA, a national association for students and teachers of marketing, management and entrepreneurship. Anacortes students performed well, taking the stage time after time at an evening awards ceremony at which competition results were announced. I had the pleasure of judging a tourism marketing event built around a hypothetical white river rafing company. Students were given 20 minutes to come up with investment ideas and a complete marketing plan for a pair of judges playing the role of company owners. Sharp young people … an impressive event!
A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
