It was an afternoon of recognition Tuesday, March 9 when the 80-member Soroptimist International of Anacortes presented “Making a Difference for Women” awards to several individuals and organizations. The club’s Women of Distinction award went to Martha Clure, Jean Fantini and Sally Miller. Their Women Helping Women award went to Diana Berge and the Northwest Women’s Law Center. Advancing the Status of Women awards were given to Island Hospital Volunteers, Island Hospital Auxiliary and the Women Adding Value Everywhere (WAVE) organization of Shell Puget Sound Refinery. Representing WAVE were Carolyn Whalen and June Snelson. The Law Center was represented by Emily Lieberman. Island Hospital Volunteers were represented by Ho Taylor, and the Hospital Auxiliary was represented by Jerri Eichorn. All award winners are invited to a regional Soroptimist event April 27 at the Skagit Valley Casino Resort. President of the Anacortes service organization is Shirley Bowlin.
A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
