Red Cross Real Heroes

Northern Lights Casino was the location of this year’s Red Cross Real Heroes Breakfast, an event that doubles as fund-raiser and opportunity to acknowledge outstanding community contributions. In the first photo, Barb Ringhouse praises the work of Island Hospital volunteer Ho Taylor, recipient of the Community Volunteer award. In the second photo, Real Heroes award recipient Michele Onarato (blue sweater) listens to a speaker. Michele was honored for her work with feral cats on Fidalgo and Guemes islands. Also among those honored was Anacortes Police Officer Janet Wilson, pictured here with Krista Ngo of the Bank of America. Youngest award recipient was Amber Paszkowski, who was honored for awakening her brother and sister and getting them out of their burning house. Other award recipients included Charles Smith, Roy Duncan, Dick and Laura Smock, Candace Thompson, Sara Drum, Sybil Graham, Joann Hoover and Robin Swain.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
