Ted and Leila’s sanctuary

Ted and Leila Meyer talk about their garden, but the term “sanctuary” seems more appropriate, not only for their human guests but for the seasonal bird population as well. Ted and Leila’s garden, which features an amazing number of beautiful flowers, shrubs and trees, is made more special by the fact that they designed and planted it themselves. Favorites among the many garden elements are hand-crafted swinging gates at either end of the back yard. As noted, there are a number of birdhouses including the chapel design pictured here. All are occupied. In addition, the garden space features a quail-topped weather vane, a water fountain and a swinging wicker bench seat. Leila reports that her roses are coming on like gangbusters with the recent spring sun. Soon it will be my pleasure to visit once again.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
