Moms and toy boats

A favorite activity at the annual Anacortes Waterfront Festival is the boat-building area sponsored by the Fidalgo Island Rotary Club. Due to cramped quarters, boat-building teams usually consist of just one child and a parent. I come from a family of six children, so I already know what a critical role mom plays in a happy childhood. Still, I was impressed by the number of moms who grabbed saws, hammers and nails to help their girls and boys turn blocks of wood into sailboats and fighting ships. My favorite among these photos is the fourth shot, where a trusting mom actually held a nail in place while her son wielded a hammer. Good job, moms!

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
