There are many highly competitive runners at the annual Tesoro March Point 5K and 10K, but the event is known for its focus on fun. Each year the day opens with the Kids’ Half-Mile run, a quick scramble around the grounds adjacent to the employees’ recreation building. Because the competition is split up into age groups, many young runners finish with a trophy. All young runners earn ribbons, free lunch and prizes in a post-run ceremony. The young lady in the last photo here won not only her own age bracket, but the overall top time for girls in the Half-Mile. The photographer didn’t have to ask her to smile…
A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
