Memorial Day flowers
World War II veterans from Anacortes presided over several Memorial Day ceremonies, including one in the water between Fidalgo and Guemes islands. Present for the brief mid-channel ceremony and another on Guemes Island were Barbara and Ted Cousland (fourth photo). Cousland, a resident of Pennsylvania, is the grandnephew of Harry Causland, after whom Causland Memorial Park is named. Causland was an Army private in World War I, honored posthumously with the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in battle. Also among those in the crowd were former newspaper publisher Wallie Funk and County Commissioner Don Munks (second photo). “Taps” was played by Anacortes High School band leader Bennie Rawson.
