Election 2005

Beth Prins said, “Let’s throw an election night party” and Laurie Gere said, “Let’s do it at my restaurant.” The result was a downtown event that drew a full house, from candidates and supporters to town crier and press. Candidates pictured here were among those who went home Tuesday night feeling pretty confident about victory. Bill Turner is in the second photo (city council); Bill Short and Pat Mooney in the third (port commission) and Jan Iversen, friends and family in the last (hospital district). Mayor Dean Maxwell gathered a comfortable margin of votes after the first ballot report, taking home a 67 percent total over challenger Kevin McKeown. An emotional Maxwell thanked the audience and committed to working in partnership with the community to making this great little city “better each day than it was yesterday.”

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
