Team Maxwell

A small army of supporters responded to three-term Mayor Dean Maxwell’s call for election support. Day to day campaign details, however, were handled for the most part by a small team with a strong combination of communication skills. Early in the evening on election night, Maxwell campaign principals Duncan Frazier (former publisher of the Anacortes American) and Kathleen Hobbs made high-tech connections with the county courthouse. Other important players in the Maxwell campaign were retired newspaper publisher Wallie Funk (with the mayor, second photo) and Jim and Darlene Bergeson. Reviewing early returns in the third photo are Duncan, Beth Prins and Cheryl Frazier. Finally, with announcement of a 67 percent approval rating on the first wave of ballots, the mayor shares a special moment with his wife, Lisa. It was a spirited campaign which Maxwell and his supporters saw as an opportunity to celebrate the character and health of this island community. Voter response indicates the vast majority were unimpressed by suggestions that a crisis is looming.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
