Faith shared

Among speakers and musicians at the Wednesday night Baccalaureate in Anacortes were AHS seniors Alexa Bowen, Linnea Morrow and Alex Dunton. Among male speakers were Mark Richcreek and Andrew Covert. Piano soloist and praise band member Cory Edwards provided opening music. Linnea displayed a craft project from her days in Vacation Bible School, noting that she could not always see the name “Jesus” spelled out among the spaces between wood pieces. “I don’t always see God in the kaleidoscope of life,” she said, “but He’s always there, between the lines.” Alexa talked about the power of prayer, urging those in her audience to “take a step forward … step out of your comfort zone. Go for it.” Mark said, “God always forgives us, releases us from the chains of sin. I said, ‘Look what I’ve done,’ and God said, ‘Look what I’VE done’.” Andrew talked about the apostle Peter and his walk of faith on the water. “At times I’ve lost my focus,” he said of his high school career. “Every time I took my eyes off Jesus, I felt myself sinking into the waves.” The good news? “The ‘waves’ have brought me closer to God.” Barnabi Merritt said, “The good news is, the work’s done for us. The only thing you need to do is let Him in. There is someone begging for your attention. Let God love you.”

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
