Author! Author!

Monday, August 11 was a wonderful day for author Jane Berentson and those who love her. Jane, a 2000 graduate of Burlington-Edison High School, had her first book published in May. “Miss Harper Can Do It” is the story of a young schoolteacher in Tacoma struggling with her “new life” as her boyfriend serves in the military in the Middle East. Jane and her audience had fun Monday evening as she presided over a book reading and signing event at the Burlington Public Library. Among those present were mom and dad, Susan and Dan Berentson, plus lots of other relatives, friends … even old schoolteachers! Jane now makes her home in New York, where her career has included stints in the publishing business and public schools (middle school teacher). A second book is in the works.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
