Academy event

Thursday, September 17 marked the start of construction of the Northwest Career & Technical Academy near the Anacortes waterfront. Among those pictured here are Academy Executive Director Donneta Spath; Anacortes School District Superintendent Chris Borgen, SVC President Dr. Gary Tollefson, Anacortes port commissioners Keith Rubin and Bill Short; Port Executive Bob Hyde; former SVC President Dr. Jim Ford, talking to building architect and SVC marine tech instructor Mike Sweitzer. The Academy is a joint venture involving Skagit County high schools and Skagit Valley College. The new education facility will provide students the opportunity to obtain job preparation skills through hands-on education, applied academics and marine technology training. The center will include a 15,000 square foot building with classrooms, labs, an assembly area, administrative offices and a 2,600 square foot storage building. Four main labs will be organized around a central project area.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
