Hitting the streets

Fourth of July celebrations historically attract political candidates, and the 2010 Anacortes Fourth of July Parade was no exception. Democrat Kristin Lytton, a member of the Anacortes School Board, is pictured in the “Gallery” section of this website. She hopes to fill the State House seat vacated by Dave Quall. Republican Don Munks, also of Anacortes, is no stranger to elected office, having served previously as Skagit County Commissioner. This year, however, he is running for election as Skagit County Assessor, an office to which he was appointed after Mark Leander stepped down for health reason. Whidbey Island’s Norma Smith, a Republican incumbent, is seeking re-election to the State House while fellow Republican Mike Newman of Skagit County seeks to serve in the Legislature for the first time. Also participating in the parade was a group of citizens representing Fidalgo Democrats.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
