United Way celebrates

It was an afternoon of celebration Friday, January 28 as United Way of Skagit County staff and volunteers gathered for a post-campaign event at McIntyre Hall in Mount Vernon. For the first time, contributions to the local United Way exceeded $1 million. Pictured here with outgoing Board President Sue Krienen is Dan Berentson, a long-time volunteer who was named recipient of the Ted Reep Award. Reep, whose son Ray is also pictured here, was instrumental in establishing the local United Way. Ray, who is past mayor of Mount Vernon, announced the award. Also pictured here is top volunteer Alan Daniels, posing for a photo with United Way Executive Director Debra Lancaster and 2010 Campaign leader Maureen Lama. Krienen passed on the Board President’s gavel to Terry Belcoe.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
