Derby field shots

Day One of the 2011 Anacortes Salmon Derby began for me at B Dock at Cap Sante Boat Haven. There I met up with Captain Jim Keith of Fox Island Salmon Charters. One of the other hats Jim wears is that of my brother-in-law. Even though we would finish the day without a fish, Jim, my son Mark and I had a great time. How can you not when you’re spending the day in the awesome San Juans neighborhood? Our fishing day was split between Cypress Island and Thatcher’s Pass. In addition to other derby participants, we spotted state ferries, a few sailboats, a tanker or two and a recreational vessel used temporarily by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. Report on derby results will follow when available.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
