Kids derby 2011

The weather was perfect, the food delicious … and the fish plentiful at the 2011 Kids Fishing Derby sponsored by the City of Anacortes Parks and Recreation Department. Among those pictured here are Tristan Cooper of Anacortes; Elizabeth Knowles of Oak Harbor; Jayden Soltero of Anacortes and Landon Coleman of Anacortes. When 4-year-old Tristan was told, “He’s fighting,” he responded: “Well, I’m fighting, too!” Ten-year-old Elizabeth was fishing with her father and sister when she caught her first fish ever. Jayden was fishing with grandmother Kerry Foy and Alex Thulin, who came all the way from Granite Falls for this adventure. Landon caught his fish with the assistance of proud grandfather Brad. Also on hand to help were Lions Club members from Concrete (“We left home about 5 a.m.”) and members of the Fidalgo Chapter of the Puget Sound Anglers. Several members shuttled little fishermen and adults to and from the lake.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
