Taylor cutter moves to Fidalgo

April 1 was a dramatic day in the life of Martin Taylor (pictured), son of the late Don Taylor of Guemes Island. On that day Martin and a team of volunteers including family friend David Jackson moved the beautiful wooden boat left unfinished in a Guemes shop when Don died. The cutter was moved to Anacortes, where the plan calls for Jackson to finish its construction. Don, a Lutheran pastor whose career included skippering the vessel “Christian” out of Anacortes, built several boats over the course of his life. The UW graduate and his wife, Helene, raised their family in numerous Northwest communities including Bellingham, Everett, Pacific Lutheran University and Sandpoint, Idaho. Helene was also Anacortes born and bred (my father Buehl’s sister), so it was inevitable that the couple would end up here after retirement. I am eager to watch David complete this project, and hope to see her launched in local waters.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
