It was a great day to kick off the Boating Season! On Saturday, May 4, dozens gathered at Cap Sante Marina for an opening day event hosted by the Port of Anacortes. Guests included Town Crier Richard Riddell and cannoneers Lee and Betty Dawes, as well as musicians David Jackson, Bill and Betty Connor and muralist Bill Mitchell. Lots of business people and elected officials were on hand, too. Bob Atterberry brought the chowder, Pat Grant the blessing, Kathy Larson and Stephanie Hamilton delivered greetings from the Chamber of Commerce. Greg Mustari led the boat parade, which also included a pair of paddle boarders.
A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
