Ready to launch

Exciting times for Island Adventures Whale Watching! This new vessel, built in LaConner, arrived by barge to the Anacortes waterfront today. Launch is scheduled tomorrow from the Dakota Creek Industries synchrolift. According to the Anacortes company’s website, “Island Explorer 5 is 98′ long, 30′ wide with a cruise speed of more than 25 knots. She is also incredibly quiet, which will enhance the whale watching experience.  20+ years of whale watching experience has gone into the design of the Island Explorer 5.  She has three full walk-around outside viewing decks with cathedral bow seating that provides more outside viewing area than any tour boat in the region. There are also two large heated cabins with seating for all guests, state of the art A/V system, and large comfortable bathrooms. Onboard guests will enjoy our South of the Border Cafe with hot food, fresh products, beer and wine for sale.”

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
