Ribbon-cutting at new jail

Skagit County officials including First District Commissioner Ron Wesen celebrated the completion of the new, 400-bed jail facility Tuesday in south Mount Vernon. The new jail is called the Skagit County Community Justice Center. It will open sometime in the coming weeks on a date that will not be disclosed for security reasons. Marc Estvold of Anacortes served as project manager. He is also manager of the Anacortes High School construction and renovation project. The jail is located at 201 Suzanne Lane, the one-time site of a truck stop. An Open House for the public will take place Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
