Arts Festival announces awards, purchases

The Anacortes Arts Festival announced awards and public art purchases of $12,00 at the Opening for the Arts at the Port Fine Art Exhibition last Saturday night. The evening was attended by Juror Pablo Schugurensky, many of the participating artists and an estimated 300 guests. Taking top honors was Hiroko Seki from Issaquah, who received the $3,000 Best of Show Award (selected by the Juror) and a $1,000 Eve Deisher Memorial Award (selected by Lanny Bergner). One of Seki’s pieces is also being purchased for the Anacortes High School, through the Festival Anacortes Collects Public Art Program. Also receiving honors were Ann Chadwick Reid from Bow – $1,000 Excellence Award selected by the Juror; Sharon Swanson from Seattle – $1,000 Excellence Award selected by the Juror; Margaret Davidson from Mt Vernon – $1,000 Festival Award; Kathleen Secrest from Clinton – $500 T Bailey Award selected by Ruby Tanaka; Alex Hanesworth from Anacortes – $500 NEW Emerging Artist Award; Heather Danso from Seattle – second Anacortes Collects Purchase piece for the Anacortes High School. Visitors to the show will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite artist to receive a $1,000 People’s Choice Award – to be announced on Sunday, August 6 at the end of the Festival. About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
