Master boatbuilder Jay Smith of Fidalgo Island (top photo, bow) presided over the Saturday launch and christening of the Viking ship “S/V Polaris” at Bowman Bay. Smith, who built the boat for a client, apprenticed in Norway. He worked in the Faroe Islands and Denmark, and studied under master boatbuilder Nils O. Ulset. Also part of the traditional Nordic launch ceremony was a team of horses and cedar rollers. Dozens of people braved cold, sometimes wet weather to witness the event. Some volunteers even stepped forward to assist with the launch.
