State Rep. Lytton to retire

State Rep. Kristine Lytton (D-40th Dist.) announced on March 14 that she will retire from the Legislature “to spend more time with the local community.” An announcement on her website stated in part: “Since first being elected in 2010 as a state representative for the 40th Legislative District, Rep. Kris Lytton has been an advocate for children, education, and tax reform. ‘I came to Olympia to expand opportunities for students, support our hardworking teachers, and fully fund education. This year, after years of bipartisan effort, we finally crossed that finish line.’ Previously an Anacortes School Board member, Lytton focused on education and served on the bipartisan taskforce to produce solutions to fully fund education. Seatmate Rep. Jeff Morris, D-Mount Vernon, praised Lytton’s commitment and dedication. ‘Kris has been a champion for the people of the 40th legislative district, ranging from important transportation projects to landmark education policy and funding efforts, to name just a few’.” Cascadia Weekly reports that Whatcom County Council member Rud Browne will seek to be elected to Lytton’s seat in the Legislature. About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
