Former Northern State facility on cusp of change
This summer the Port of Skagit will assume ownership of all but about seven acres of the historic campus now known as the SWIFT (Sedro-Woolley Innovation for Tomorrow) Center, according to a report in the Skagit Valley Herald. Local ownership is the next step toward opening the property to the public and transforming it into an economic hub with tenants including Janicki Bioenergy. The company hopes to have a lease in place for a southern portion of the campus by June, with plans to begin construction by mid-2019. “For now,” reports the Herald, “Janicki Bioenergy plans to build four 40,000-square-ft. buildings one at a time along the southern portion of the campus. The buildings will be modeled after the historic character of the hospital buildings and will house research, development and manufacturing for Janicki Bioenergy products.” SWIFT partners include the Port of Skagit, Skagit County and the City of Sedro-Woolley.
