What a great afternoon Thursday at the Anacortes High School track, where AHS hosted a track and field competition including athletes from Burlington-Edison and Blaine. A joy to see these young people demonstrating their talents, celebrating the opportunity to compete against others. Kudos to athletes, coaches and volunteer staff!
A high profile church on Commercial Avenue is coming down, victim of cost-prohibitive structural issues. The old Pilgrim Congregational Church will be demolished, with plans for a mixed use office/apartment building.

A South Fidalgo bluff trail hike yielded many opportunities to photograph native plants, including Indian Paintbrush, one of my favorites.
It’s been exciting to see the work of young Anacortes photographer Jaden D’Angelo, especially some of his drone work. These images include an evening shot over Fidalgo Bay and a bird’s eye view of Cranberry Lake at Deception Pass State Park. Enjoy!
Yesterday on a hike at Rosario Beach I decided to examine and record some of the details carved into LaConner sculptor Tracy Powell’s “Maiden of Deception Pass” story pole, commissioned by the Samish Indian Nation in the early Eighties. An incredible piece of work.
It’s been wonderful these past few weeks having young Anacortes photographer Jaden D’Angelo share some of his images. With his permission, two of my favorites from the latest collection: Cap Sante Marina and Deception Pass.
It is fascinating to watch crews work on the twins spans at Deception Pass Bridge. Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has contracted for the painting of the iconic bridges, with scope of work including paint removal and some repair. Each bridge is “wrapped” for the painting process, and to prevent debris from falling into […]
I’m guessing most area parks were busy Tuesday as sunshine and spring break prompted people to get outside! At Rosario I spotted picnickers, beach walkers, tidepool explorers, kayakers, fishermen, families … and even a couple of small dogs sharing a paddleboard with their favorite human (definitely on a short leash). It was great to have […]
Monday morning is bustling for the Port of Anacortes. On the Guemes Channel, crews load the Amber Star with petroleum coke from the Shell Refinery while the San Juan Enterprise prepares to take on a load. At Cap Sante Marina there is less contractor equipment in the water as a new “A” Dock moves closer […]
Ducks have been plentiful, but I haven’t seen so many bunnies as I saw this morning on my walk through the wetlands at Ship Harbor. Hoping also for the return of osprey.
