The Anacortes Chamber today announced selection of a new executive. “We are pleased to inform you that after a nationwide search, the Anacortes Chamber of Commerce has named Jesica Stickles as the new President/CEO,” said Events and Communications Director Bridget Fry. Stickles comes to the position from the Marysville Tulalip Chamber of Commerce, where she […]
It was a heartwarming experience this afternoon to see many people of all ages on beach and trail near the state ferry terminal at Ship Harbor. Among them was Anacortes birdwatcher Neil O’Hara. While we were in this corner of the preserve I saw an eagle, blue heron, kingfisher, crows, seagulls, towhees, wrens and robins. […]
Based on my casual observation of birth notices in the Sunday paper, I had concluded there were fewer babies born in Anacortes in 2020. Wrong! A quick check with Island Hospital showed the opposite reality. There were 485 babies delivered at the hospital in 2020, as opposed to 424 in 2019. Annual average of newborns […]
Samish Indian Nation General Manager Leslie Eastwood provided the following information regarding the pole pictured here at the Fidalgo Bay Resort: “This story pole is called “the healing pole” and was carved by a group of local native and non-native carvers under the guidance and direction of Bill Bailey (Upper Skagit), who designed the […]
Anacortes artist Kylie Fair Anderson took advantage of today’s sunshine to express herself on canvas, “setting up shop” and drawing admirers near the parking area of the Cap Sante lookout. This work is an acrylic. The young artist is working to establish herself in the Northwest market. What is plein air painting? En plein air is […]
I often scan the sky for eagles when I get to the Mt. Erie neighborhood, but on a recent day that scan caught a flash of color. Turns out it was hang glider Tom Johns, who had just taken a leap off of Mt. Erie. I reached the county park area below with a couple […]
Contractors are back at work in earnest on the two iconic bridges at Deception Pass. These photos were taken on a Saturday morning. Work also continues at night, with traffic across the bridges often reduced to one lane. Note two colors on some sections of the bridge: brown color is primer coat. Spans will ultimately […]
Work continues on custom stonework, home of the refurbished memorial plaque at the city’s downtown Causland Memorial Park. Contracted for the stonework was Bryan Elliott, who has done a number of renovation and repair projects at the park over the years.
Anyone driving Highway 20 between Whidbey and Fidalgo islands Wednesday encountered traffic backups, as seen in this photo from Lighthouse Point. There is single lane traffic between Canoe Pass Bridge and Rosario Road as crews repair log damaged guardrails and rock posts in the park area.
I always enjoy a visit to Deception Pass State Park, but my Monday morning journey was extraordinary in terms of birds. There were Canada geese and mallards at Cranberry Lake; bald eagles perched in a treetop between lake and surf. There were sparrows, crows and of course, seagulls and cormorants. There was a hawk flying […]
Deserving of the “best kept secret” tag in the world of military aviation is the PBY-Naval Air Museum in downtown Oak Harbor. This proud little museum is a must for anyone, regardless of age, who appreciates airplanes, history and specifically, naval aviation on Whidbey Island. My grandson and I had a wonderful time at the […]
