Bridge arch under wraps

What almost appears to be white bandages is a protective “catch fabric” spread beneath Canoe and Deception Pass bridges during an extensive repair and paint project. This photo of Canoe Pass Bridge was taken from the North Beach area of Deception Pass State Park, Whidbey Island.

Sea kayakers take on waves

I was surprised to find dozens of people at Deception Pass Park beaches on a cold, windy day. So you can imagine my shock when I discovered four sea kayakers PURPOSELY headed into choppy waters between Whidbey, Fidalgo and Deception islands. It turns out the Bellingham foursome was made up of experienced kayakers including Junior […]

Watery wonderland

Water levels are very high at the Ship Harbor Interpretive Preserve adjacent to the state ferry terminal. Rainfall runoff flows from surrounding highlands to the wetland below, with much of the water ultimately feeding into the saltwater harbor. A beautiful season to enjoy the wooden boardwalk that meanders through wetlands. Already there are signs of […]

Anacortes High School Boys Basketball Coach Brett Senff made local history last week in winning the final home game for the 2019-2020 Seahawks. Senff, himself an AHS basketball alum, broke the coaching record with his 213th win. The previous record of 212 wins for Bill Taylor had been in place since 1960! “Hard work will […]

Goldeneye and friends

Some migrate, some stay, some are visitors here for just a season … but where there is water you will always find birds! I believe one of the seabirds here is a Common Goldeneye. Not sure about the other. Both were paddling around just offshore at Seafarers’ Memorial Park on Saturday afternoon. Get out, bring […]

Also visible are upland storage facilities, some offering marine services. Other […]

High school celebrates new spaces

I had the privilege of taking a tour of new spaces at Anacortes High School, instructional spaces ranging from choir and band rooms to shops and exercise rooms. Tour guide Bob Knorr pointed out that in addition to traditional classes, new facilities will present opportunities for students to get a jump start on practical skills […]

Construction crews will work through the weekend and into next as they put the finishing touches on several Anacortes High School project elements including Brodniak Theatre. The theatre, located adjacent to Williams Gym, opened in 1976. This renovation is the most dramatic of several updates since then, with elements including new lobby, sound, lights, curtains, […]
