Tesoro to curtail operations

Tesoro announced Monday afternoon (April 12) its intentions to curtail operations at the Anacortes Refinery in the wake of the April 2 incident that resulted in the death of six employees and serious injury of one other (Tesoro spokesman Lynn Westfall in San Antonio said that Lew Janz of Anacortes died at 12:40 a.m. Tuesday, April 13 at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Matt Gumbel of Oak Harbor remains in critical condition). A company press release said all Tesoro employees in Anacortes will remain employed and receive full benefits. A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
