New arch greets guests: 2005

It was July 2005 when the annual “Community Portrait” hosted by the Anacortes American was taken in front of the shiny new arch greeting guests to downtown Anacortes. Can you find yourself or someone you know in this crowd?

Remembering Jack Hill

Anacortes native Jack Hill, who died at age 102 on March 23, 2017, was a remarkable man. I was privileged to interview him in 2008 as he was one of few locals who had worked on construction of both Shell and Texaco refineries on March’s Point. Hill worked for Bechtel on the construction projects, then […]

John Wayne’s Nor’Wester: 2010

John Wayne’s first yacht, the Nor’wester, pictured here as a participant in the 2010 Anacortes Work Boat Races. Originally built in 1932, the Norwester was first christened the “Chiro” by her owner Charles Gilbert. In 1937 she was sold, and ended up serving the Navy during WWII to help patrol the coast. After the war, […]

Railroad owners: Tommy & Anne

Anacortes Railway Co. owners Anne and Tommy Thompson. Tommy hand-built this locomotive and passenger cars, operating several years on a narrow gauge track between 4th Street and the Calico Cupboard Restaurant on Commercial Avenue. Tommy died in 1999, and Anne donated the train to the City of Anacortes.

Kayaking Heart Lake: 2010

One of my favorites among my kayak shots, most of which are taken in seawater settings such as Deception Pass and Fidalgo Bay. This kayaker was with a small group on Heart Lake, 10 years ago.

BMW Oracle: a chapter in local maritime history

It was the fall of 2008 when I took these photos of the BMW Oracle Racing Team bringing their prize product into Lovric’s Sea-Craft boatyard on the Guemes Channel. The team, which built the 90-foot trimaran here and tested it in Rosario Strait, ultimately barged the vessel to San Diego. Team helmsman James Spithill said […]

State of the City 2013

This image is a “look-back” on two levels. It was seven years ago that Anacortes Mayor Dean Maxwell accepted an invitation from the Chamber of Commerce to deliver a “State of the City” message at a membership luncheon. Among slides in his presentation was a black and white photo from the archives of the Anacortes […]

Anacortes boy: Buehl Berentson, 1925-2007

He would have been 95 years old today. Buehl Jerome Berentson, born in Anacortes on February 24, 1925 to Marion and Martha Berentson. As photos indicate, Dad followed the path taken by many in his generation: from high school to wartime military service, in his case the U.S. Navy and the Pacific Theatre. Home safe […]

Navy ‘Prowlers’ May 2006

The Grumman EA-6B was a four-seat electronic countermeasures aircraft flown out of Whidbey Island Naval Air Station for many years. I shot this photo before a Cessna flight with a civilian instructor associated with non-Navy operations at a facility adjacent to the Oak Harbor base. The civilian group has since relocated to Bayview Airport in […]

Wyman’s Marina 2009

It was already closed and literally on the way out, but this 2009 photo shows tiny Wyman’s Marina (previously Robinson’s) on the Guemes Channel in Anacortes (white buildings). Part of the privately owned marina was disassembled by this time, and ultimately demolished as part of a mitigation project by the Port of Anacortes. The blue […]
