Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.

That was the case Friday morning at Cap Sante Boat Haven, where contractors wrap up the E&F docks project that features 138 new slips served by new utilities including power, water and sewer. Cultbertson Marine Construction served as general contractor on this Port of Anacortes project, with subs including AMO Mechanical, PNW Electrical and Bellingham Marine Industries (Bellingham-based manufacturer of concrete monolithic docks). The project will likely be completed next week, in plenty of time to make preparations for the Spring Anacortes Boat Show and the Anacortes Salmon Derby in March.

The bulk of the informative session was led by TPEP group representatives Jenny Beltramini (right) and Mt. Erie Principal Peter Donaldson (center). Anacortes is one of three school districts selected to present final program proposals for consideration for statewide application some time in the future. In addition to performance evaluation, the Anacortes proposal includes focus on opportunity for professional growth and attention to improved student achievement. Review, selection and adoption of TPEP proposals is expected to take place over the next year or two. One possibility is that school districts will be allowed to select from among the three proposals currently being finalized.

About Steve Berentson: A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time.

Maxwell’s annual “state of the city” report acknowledged on several occasions the difficulties of operating a municipal government in a lousy economy. Among those he lauded, however, were dedicated city staffers, council members … and citizen volunteers who save the city a great deal of money. The mayor referenced a Sister Cities trip to Russia, where he was again reminded: “I live in the best small community in America.” Full remarks from the mayor’s speech are posted at http://www.cityofanacortes.org/Mayor/Documents/StateCity.pdf

About Steve Berentson: A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time.

I know I’ll likely be scraping ice from my windshield again soon. I remember that it snowed during the Anacortes Salmon Derby just a couple of years back (late March!). But I just couldn’t help myself this afternoon. Inspired by the sun and a brief outing for lunch at Gere-a-Deli, I grabbed my camera and headed for the back yard. Sure enough, I discovered dozens of furry little buds like this on our apple tree. The evidence is clear: Spring 2012 is on its way!

I just learned that the sale of KVOS has been finalized and now most of its employees have been laid off, effective around March 5. KVOS will remain on the air and will continue to be an affiliate of the MeTV network. As a former print journalist, I can relate to the trauma being experienced by many as traditional media wrestles with challenges posed by new technology and an abysmal economy. Newport Television, LLC signed an agreement last month to sell Bellingham’s KVOS-TV to OTA Broadcasting. OTA is based in Reston, Virginia. Earlier this year, OTA bought KFFV-TV in Seattle. According to the Seattle Times, OTA is a subsidiary of MSD Capital, an investment firm controlled by computer tycoon Michael Dell. Newport had owned KVOS since 2008.

About Steve Berentson: A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time.

About Steve Berentson: A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time.

In this photo, C&D docks are being replaced. Today, just a few weeks remain on a project to replace E&F docks. At the time of this photo, the current CSBH boat launch had yet to be built (2007), and The Cannery (not pictured) was under construction. Cap Sante Marine has since moved to the north end of the city, and the tiny “Captain’s Place” restaurant site is now the site of Anthony’s Restaurant. Also completed since 2006 are marina features including esplanade and fuel dock, not to mention the amazing cleanup and restoration of neighboring Seafarers’ Memorial Park. More change on the horizon as Anacortes seeks to capitalize on its shoreline.

TPO is an acronym for Treatment Plant Operator. I was pleased to partner recently with writer Trude Witham as the magazine featured the Anacortes plant as one of its “top performers” in the February 2012 issue. The article, which opens with a two-page spread featuring plant operator Lou Zurcher (see photo), is titled “Making the Grade.” A subhead reads: “The City of Anacortes transitioned from two primary plants to a new secondary plant, meeting permit specifications and winning six awards.” To see this article and to learn more about the people who operate it, visit http://www.tpomag.com/ezine
