4th of July

Americans all over the nation today celebrate Independence Day … and Anacortes is no exception. It will be a busy day for those who choose to participate in community events, ranging from the 11 a.m. parade down Commercial Avenue to the fireworks display tonight off the point of Cap Sante. Immediately following the parade there will be a full menu of family activities at Causland Park, just two blocks from downtown on 8th Street. Adding to the festive atmosphere are members of the Gold Wings, a motorcycle club that chose once again this year to spend the holiday weekend in Anacortes. Thanks are in order to the City of Anacortes, Rotary clubs and Bubba Sudz Car Wash for sponsoring this year’s community fireworks display. This old fashioned bunting hangs on the gazebo at The Dish Ran Away with the Spoon, and also next door at the Anacortes Chocolate Factory.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
