Big kickoff for United Way

Published September 15, 2003 / by Steve Berentson

Skagit County United Way agencies got a great fund-raising campaign boost last Friday when kickoff donations by area businesses and other organizations were announced at a Mount Vernon breakfast event. Pictured here is Shell Puget Sound Refinery executive Tom Meyer, who represented the refinery as well as Shell Foundation with checks of $25,000 and $57,000, respectively. Receiving the checks was Anacortes resident Carl Bruner, a Sedro-Woolley School District administrator who serves as United Way President. Also represented at the event were local groups including Tesoro ($25,000) and the Anacortes School District ($4,000). Pre-campaign contributions totalled almost $291,000. The county-wide campaign is now officially under way.

About Steve Berentson
A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
