Neither rain, nor snow

Amid the echoes of excited young sledders on a nearby hill, rosy-cheeked David Holzemer worked his way from doorstep to doorstep Monday afternoon. David, who is a Skagit Valley Herald carrier, wheels down to our paper box seven days a week. Talk about your “character building” — these last few days have been a real challenge for these kids and the adults who drop their papers from Mount Vernon. After only a three-month interim stint as a carrier when I was a teen in Everett, I have a deep and abiding respect for these entrepreneurs. Carry on, David! P.S. The headline on the front page of the newspaper David delivered: “Winter weather is holding on.”

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
