African gospel

In the shadow of Martin Luther King Day, members of the African Gospel Acappella singing group based in Vancouver, Washington sang and worshiped Sunday at Anacortes Lutheran Church. The six men, who met at a school for the blind in their native country of Liberia, have been singing together for 12 years. Their ministry includes construction of a resource center for the blind in Monrovia, Liberia’s capitol city. The inside jacket cover of one of their CDs reads in part: “We dedicate our lives, this CD and our entire ministry to Jesus Christ the King of Kings. We want to remember our friends and family in Liberia. We have not forgotten you or the suffering of the people. Our roots (are) what created this music and this is a gift from the almighty God. Please know you are in our prayers and we love you Mama Liberia.” See more photos in Activities section under “African Gospel Acappella.”

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
