Canoe Pass kayakers

In search of yet another Deception Pass photograph, I was fortunate Tuesday afternoon to encounter an adventurous team of kayakers moving through Canoe Pass. This photograph was taken from the rail of the shorter of the two Deception Pass spans as one kayaker “parked” and perched briefly on the rocks while a partner paddled close to the south Fidalgo Island shoreline. Included in the kayakers’ exercise were “rolls,” where they purposefully flip the kayak and then right themselves. Cold and currents are two challenges that come immediately to mind when I imagine being involved in such an activity. Different strokes (no pun intended) for different folks.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
