A heron perches atop a dead tree at Ship’s Harbor, a Fidalgo Island area steeped in history. Just a few hundred yards away is the state ferry terminal, base to ferries traveling to and from the San Juan Islands and Sidney, British Columbia. Pilings in the wetlands area stand as a reminder of the days when the city was “the salmon canning capital of the world.”
