Republicans share thoughts

It was a quiet evening in comparison with the recent gathering of Democrats, but Anacortes Republicans with no assignment in terms of presidential candidates spent two hours talking issues Tuesday night. A couple of dozen people showed up at Anacortes Middle School, and before the night was out they had elected delegates to the county convention. Also on the agenda was completion of a party questionnaire that included opportunities to prioritize issues at state and federal levels. Long-time Republican leader Dr. Bud Strom was elected precinct committee officer in absentia for Anacortes Precinct 6 (participants pictured here). A 16-year-old sat in the proceedings, experiencing firsthand an example of grassroots American politics. His mother was recommended for appointment as precinct committee officer.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
