I shot this photo more than 20 years ago, when Anacortes native Bill Lowman organized the Island Boxing Club with fights in the basement of City Hall. The club had folded and the boxing ring moved to the Northern Lights Casino. Today local boxing has been revitalized by Leonard Johnson, who is teaching students under the name of Fidalgo Bay Boxing. The Anacortes American reports the casino has donated the ring back to Johnson’s non-profit organization, and he has contributed about $40,000 worth of his own boxing equipment. Sessions are conducted at 5:30 p.m. Mondays, 6 p.m. Wednesdays and 8 a.m. Saturdays, again in the basement of City Hall. For more photos, see “Island Boxing Club” in Activities section of this site.
