Boxing in Anacortes

I shot this photo more than 20 years ago, when Anacortes native Bill Lowman organized the Island Boxing Club with fights in the basement of City Hall. The club had folded and the boxing ring moved to the Northern Lights Casino. Today local boxing has been revitalized by Leonard Johnson, who is teaching students under the name of Fidalgo Bay Boxing. The Anacortes American reports the casino has donated the ring back to Johnson’s non-profit organization, and he has contributed about $40,000 worth of his own boxing equipment. Sessions are conducted at 5:30 p.m. Mondays, 6 p.m. Wednesdays and 8 a.m. Saturdays, again in the basement of City Hall. For more photos, see “Island Boxing Club” in Activities section of this site. Call Johnson for details at 391-3013.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
