Tommy Thompson Parkway

Shortly after noon Saturday, Anne Thompson cut the ribbon in a ceremony dedicating the 3.8-mile Tommy Thompson Parkway stretching from downtown Anacortes to Fidalgo Bay. Anne (right) is the widow of Tommy Thompson, whose dream was to run a narrow gauge railway along the northeast perimeter of the island. That dream was not realized, but the public parkway is now a reality. Pictured here with Thompson are City Parks and Recreation Director Gary Robinson (center) and resort manager Bob Shepard. Robinson was instrumental in negotiating purchase of 29 acres of land from Burlington Northern Railroad for $81,000. Host of the Saturday event was the Samish Indian Nation, owner of Fidalgo Bay Resort. The resort property was once the site of a Samish village.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
