Athletes deliver food

For Anacortes spring athletes, Saturday, March 12 was not about competition, but cooperation as they teamed with the Salvation Army and KLKI 1340 (next door to the Tesoro station) to gather tons of food for the needy. Totals are still being tabulated from the city-wide food drive, the third such conducted by AHS student athletes this year. Salvation Army Anacortes Corps’ “Fresh Paint” band provided entertainment from a stage in front of the radio station. Donations streamed in mid-afternoon as athletes completed their door-to-door food drive in neighborhoods throughout the city. A major donation included six pallettes of chickens from Draper Valley Farms in Mount Vernon. Food drive coordinator was Anacortes Corps Social Services Coordinator Alice Byer. Anacortes School District Athletic Director Rick Mergenthaler, who established the seasonal food drive tradition, stopped by for a visit, too. About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
