End in sight

Monday morning travelers downtown found crews busy on the block between 8th and 9th streets on Commercial Avenue. Block renovation crews are expected to be finished in the next week or so with sidewalks, curbs and new trees. Progress continues at the New Wilson Hotel, where public housing units are expected to be available this summer. Finally, a mid-May grand opening is anticipated at the Bank of the Pacific in the old downtown theater building. Just up the street, a new Italian restaurant will open May 25 at the former location of the Dish and Sidedish (next door to Anacortes Interiors). Details are pending…

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
