Fire boat

Someday I envision white lettering on a red background, but for the now the name “Leschi” blends in with the rest of the surface on the fireboat being constructed at Dakota Creek Shipyard. The $12.1 million boat, under contract for the Seattle Fire Department, is named in honor of a Nisqually tribal chief. The new vessel is 108 feet long, with a pumping capacity of 20,000 gallons of water per minute and the ability to reach an average top speed of about 14 knots. This vessel was designed for a 50-year service life. Commissioning and training are scheduled for January 2007. Naval architect and owner’s representative is Jensen Maritime Consultants of Seattle.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
